Ukrainian fashion designer Olena Dats'
We are happy to share with you an exclusive interview with one of the best-selling Ukrainian designers abroad - Olena Dats".
FfU: Olena, when did you start your designer career?
OD: My brand became a part of fashion industry in 2008 when I first took part in Paris Showroom during Paris Fashion week. Then we did our first professional lookbook, got first orders. And I’m happy we still collaborate with our first clients.
FfU: How the idea of creating your first collection emerged?
OD: I created my first collections while being a student, but those collections I've created afterwards are more appealing to my heart.
FfU: Where your collections were shown?
OD: My collections were shown in 2011 and 2013 at the exclusive showroom during Cannes Film Festival. Also, starting 2012 you may admire Olena Dats ‘ collections at showroom in Beverly Hills Fashion Forwards; Haico-Michael Rill Fashion Agency, Germany; MF Showroom Paris; WHO’S NEXT Prêt-à-Porter Paris.
FfU: What kind of fabrics do you use for your collections?
OD: We use only natural materials: silk, wool, mohair, the combination of silk and cotton. Usually I visit Premier Vision Paris to do the selection of fabrics, but we also have our permanent partners that propose to us a lot of exclusive items. We do our designs for the prints on silk. Last season we discovered machine embroidery techniques and it gave me a lot of new ideas.
FfU: Your new collection shown at Ukrainian Fashion Week F/W 2014-15 is very feminine with beautiful embroidery, where is the lace coming from, is it made in Ukraine?
OD: The lace for the collection was bought in Italy at the factory that cooperates with Haute Couture brands, and embroidery was made in Ukraine, this time we used technique chenille and satin stitch.

Mariana Blinova.
FfU: Mariana, why did you think of creating head
wreaths? Do you make them by yourself?
MB: From the very idea till the ready-made wreath
I am doing everything by myself. For the first time I thought of designing my
own wreaths when I couldn’t find an appropriate wreath for my wedding two years
ago.
FfU: For how long are you in this business?
MB: I am making head wreaths for customers since
2012.
FfU: What kind of materials do you use?
MB: Polymer clay, both genuine and artificial leather,
beads, crystals, fabric, semi-precious stones, lace.

FfU: Марьяна, как Вам пришла
идея делать головные уборы-веночки? делаете ли Вы все сами или у вас есть
команда мастериц?
MB: Абсолютно все украшения
от идеи, поиска материалов и до создания самого головного убора я делаю сама. Я
хочу, чтобы каждое украшение несло в себе именно мою задумку, мысли, энергию,
взгляд, стиль. Идея делать головные уборы-веночки родилась во время подготовки
к собственной свадьбе два года назад. В период выбора платья, украшений и
аксессуаров поняла, что просто не существует такого ободка, который я бы хотела
надеть.
FfU: Как давно вы создаете ободки?
MB: Мастерила украшения,
придумывала себе одежду и сумки сколько себя помню. Именно созданием веночков и
ободков не только для себя, но и для заказчиков, занимаюсь с 2012 года.
FfU: Какие материалы
используете?
MB: Полимерную глину, кожу
натуральную и искусственную, бусины, кристаллы, ткань, полудрагоценные камни,
кружева, бисер.
FfU: Насколько успешен Ваш
бренд? Продаете ли Вы где-то свои изделия кроме фейсбука?
MB: Сложно оценивать саму
себя. Думаю, на этот вопрос лучше ответят мои покупатели. Кроме фейсбука у меня
есть странички в других социальных сетях, также сотрудничаю с шоу-румами и pop-up store в Киеве и Львове.

Compare the world trendsetters and Ukrainian designers
We launch a new series of posts "Comparing the world trendsetters and Ukrainian designers". To start with - uh... let it be Valentino Garavani and Ksenia Schnaider. Three looks are taken from the Valentino Shanghai 2013 collection and another two - from Ksenia's F/W 2014-15 collection. Ksenia's - to the right.

Introducing young Ukrainian designer Julia Bialetska
As promised, we met with our winner – young designer Julia Bialetska. Julia’s dress received the most likes in our previous contest and we are glad to share her story with you.
Julia Bialetska is a new-comer in the world of fashion. She took part in Mercedes-Benz Kiev Fashion Days with for the first time this season, where, in fact, her first collection under brand Yulia JU was presented.
FfU: Julia, for how long did you work on your first collection? What is the main idea behind those fabulous looks you created?
JB: My collection is called “Modern Princess”. I wanted to create clothes that look like princess clothing, but are comfortable and easy to wear. For that purpose I used modern materials that give the right look of a skirt without using crinoline or any underskirt. The whole process - from the very beginning and till the moment when dresses were ready to wear - took eight months.
FfU: Where do the materials come from that you used for your collection?
JB: All materials were bought in Ukraine, some of them are imported from Italy and some are made in Ukraine.
FfU: What did you do before you decided to start designing clothes?
JB: I am a biologist but I never worked as one, I’ve worked in IT start-up business. I’ve also opened women’s clothing online store.

FfU: Юля, как долго Вы работали над своей коллекцией? Какая идея лежит в основе тех сказочных образов, что Вы создали?
JB: Коллекция называется «Современная принцесса». Моей целью было создать одежду, в которой почувствуешь себя настоящей принцессой, но при этом носиться она будет легко и удобно. Поэтому шила я ее из современных материалов, которые позволяют придать нужный эффект юбке без использования утяжеляющего юбку кринолина или подъюбника. Весь процесс создания коллекции от задумки и до окончания пошива занял восемь месяцев.
FfU: Где Вы закупали материалы для своей коллекции?
JB: Все материалы покупались в Украине, некоторые из них завезены из Италии, некоторые сделаны в Украине.
FfU: Чем Вы занимались до того, как решили попробовать себя в дизайне одежды?
JB: По профессии я биолог, но ни дня не работала биологом. Я занималась менеджментом проектов в сфере ИТ-стартапов. Я также открыла свой онлайн магазин женской одежды.
